Kylie & Dannii cover ABBA's The Winner Takes It All 12-August 08

Minogues team up for TV song
Published: Today

PINT-SIZED Aussie siblings KYLIE and DANNII MINOGUE have recorded a duet which will be the theme tune for a BBC2 sitcom.
The girls have done a version of ABBA’s hit The Winner Takes It All for Beautiful People, to be shown later this year.

The programme is written by Gimme Gimme Gimme creator JONATHAN HARVEY — who’s obviously got a bit of a thing for ABBA.

Dannii recently said she would love nothing more than to collaborate with her big sis again after the pair sang Kylie and ROBBIE WILLIAMS track Kids on Kylie’s tour last year.

She said: “I really miss singing so I am planning to do some more next year.

“Doing the duet with Kylie on tour was amazing. It was nice to share that. I definitely want to do a duet, it’s just about finding the right thing and the right time.”

Well girls, it looks like you’ve found it.

The comedy series, starring MEERA SYAL, is currently being filmed in glamorous locations including, er, Watford.

It’s based on the childhood of British-born writer Simon Doonan, now a bigwig designer at Barney’s department store in New York.

I reckon the show’s producers are spot on with their theme tune.

I can’t think of a better choice of singers for a TV show called Beautiful People than the gorgeous Minogue sisters.

Sugababes - Girls 11-August 08
RADIO RIP of the new Sugababes single 'Girl'

From PJ:

Sugababes albums are becoming something of an annual British institution - like Wimbledon, the Chelsea Flower Show and, er, Girls Aloud albums.

Anyway, their new collection of tunes is due in a few months but their comeback single is out next month and it's called 'Girls'. It is literally quite brilliant.

Here are the main things you need to know about it:

THE MAIN THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE SUGABABES COMEBACK* SINGLE 'GIRLS'

1. It's based around a rewritten version - ie use the chorus, Sugabung in some new verses and bits - of 'Here Come The Girls', which UK readers will be well aware soundtracked a series of Boots commercials last Christmas and is therefore a song lodged firmly in the British psyche yet surprisingly underexploited by The Usually Quite Opportunistic Pop Industry.

So those are the main things ou need to know.

One of the clever things about the track is that as well as not sounding like anything the Sugababes have done before while simultaneously sounding like a brilliant Sugababes single it also fits in perfectly with the brassy, Ronsonised soul sound of pop in 2008 (well, 2007) but, unlike a lot of stuff cluttering up the music industry at the moment, it doesn't sound like it's trying too hard to pull the sound off - one of the Sugababes' main selling points has always been how effortless their hitmaking seems, and it's a theme that continues with 'Girls'.

We would also like to mention here that there is a COMPLETELY EXCELLENT portion of the introduction where the intro drops out to make way for a brilliantly deranged waily Sugababes 'WHOAH OAH I DON'T NEED NO [SOMETHING OR OTHER] ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME" before the track launches properly with a big chorus.

There is a good marching band bit and the four best lyrical bits on the song are:

1. "Monroe's got nothing on me."
2. "Tonight we rule the world, beware cos here come the girls."
3. "With or without a man I feel complete."
4. "Stop speculating, I'm a regular girl."

While it's perhaps slightly deflating that the comeback* single isn't a brand spanking new song, and whiie releasing the tune from a Boots ad might prove an easy target for people who like to keep themselves busy talking about how the band have lost their edge, it's a great track, it's unexpected and, like 'About You Now', it's a reminder that one of the luxuries the Sugababes have as the UK's longest-running girlgroup is that they needn't endlessly position themselves as genrebending sonic pioneers with every new release. Rather, they can just concentrate on banging out the hits. Which is what we have here.

Don't be surprised if you hear this track everywhere - not least in ad a few breaks - as the year draws to a close.

Girls Aloud - new single in October 9-August 08

Evil Nadine's plan to go solo is put on hold yet again

GIRLS ALOUD fans — including the ones who would sooner watch than listen — can breathe a sigh of relief.
CHERYL COLE, SARAH HARDING, NICOLA ROBERTS, KIMBERLEY WALSH and NADINE COYLE are to blow rumours of a split with a new single.

The track, out in October, will be the first taken from their fifth studio album which will be released the following month and just in time for Christmas.

Fans feared their latest Tangled Up tour would be the last.

But the girls have been in the studio recording the new — and as yet unnamed — album.

They have now decided on the release schedule but are still debating which of the new songs should be first out of the traps.

A source revealed: “The girls are really excited about this one. They think it’s their best album yet.

“The last was their most successful so far and that has given them the drive to keep going.

“They have spent more time recording this one than they have in the past because they want to get it right.”

I’m sure many will have their ears peeled for the new track. Others will have their eyes peeled for the video.

Dannii's a US idol 31-July 08

X FACTOR judge Dannii Minogue looks set to be a US idol — after signing with the same American agency as Simon Cowell. The 36-year-old star is working with William Morris, who also act for pop princess Britney Spears, to kick-start her Hollywood career. A TV source said last night: “Dannii has already proved she can cut it on TV with her stints on X Factor and Australia’s Got Talent.” The Aussie beauty is said to have all the right credentials to hit the big time across the pond. Kylie Minogue’s little sister is even thought to have a chance at bagging her own show. The agency’s US base is in Beverly Hills. And our source added: “Dannii has the body, the hair, the teeth — and the BOOBS to make it in America. “I would not be surprised to see her on a big show by next year.” Meanwhile, ITV’s X Factor returns to UK screens on August 16. Insiders say Dannii — who had blazing rows with fiery judge Sharon Osbourne — gets on much better with newcomer Cheryl Cole, 25. An insider said: “It’s remarkably calm. Cheryl’s already settled in and everyone loves her. “She’s not afraid to talk back — even to Simon, which should make for good TV.”

Daily Mail: Kylie and Olivier rekindle romance in Paris 25-June 08

For months, Kylie Minogue has denied rumours of a reconciliation with her former lover Olivier Martinez, insisting they're simply friends who share a 'special bond'.

But if their affectionate hugs and loving looks over lunch in Paris yesterday are any indication, their romance is back in full swing.

The pop princess looked happier than ever as she dined with the French actor, her parents Ron and Carol and stylist William Baker while on a break from her KylieX2008 tour.

They split in February last year following rumours that he had been unfaithful.

They dated for four years and Kylie had treatment for breast cancer in Paris rather than in Australia to be with him.

Kylie described Olivier as 'her rock' and later said they would always remain friends following the tough times they shared.

However the pair have been spotted keeping company in recent times - Olivier was even present in the audience at her opening show in Paris last month.

A reconciliation has apparently been in the works for some time, with a source telling the Daily Mail in February: 'A mutual Parisian friend passed a message on to Kylie that Ollie was pining for her and deeply regretted the break-up.

'Two weeks later, Ollie called her late one night when he was a bit drunk. That was their first conversation in almost a year.

'Since that time, they have been regularly calling, having intense conversations and texting incessantly.

'Ollie has told her he is ready to start a family, to marry her and to settle down.'

Annie: Madonna's new single is shit 23-June 08
Your debut single featured a Madonna sample, so it seems silly not to ask you this: what do you think of her new stuff?
"I haven't heard it. I only heard the first single and I'm not really into it. I don't think it's that good - it doesn't sound that much like Madonna and it's a bit uninteresting. I should check out the album really before I say any more!"
